Bring your own cup
Bring Your Own Cup: #BYOC #createanewculture
Bring an end to the culture of single-use waste by bringing your cups to your favourite cafe, reducing the need for disposable plastics and unnecessary waste in general. Take the steps yourself to ensure action was taken to prevent the ongoing damage to our planet, in turn saving our ocean and reaching towards a clean planet.
We’re excited to announce our partnership with Coffee Magazine and Lizzard to encourage you to Bring Your Own Cup.
Wherever you go, take a cup from your kitchen = it does not have to be fancy but see if you can create a new culture by refusing disposable cups.
Did You Know:
1. Global plastic production has reached a total of 8bn tonnes – that’s 1 tonne for every person currently on the planet – with plastic pollution expected to triple by 2060. To put that into perspective, that is equivalent to a 1979 VW Beetle, a black rhino or 333 standard red bricks.
2. The coffee industry is a 100 billion dollar industry
3. In the UK alone it is estimated that 7 million cups PER day are used. It is estimated that 500 BILLION disposable cups are used annually- that is more than there are people in the world
4. Disposable cups were first invented in 1907 by a man called Lawrence Luellen who was concerned for the growing threat of germs to public health.
5. They may be bad for our health.
6. Paper cups are lined with polyethylene or polylactic acid- Although PLA is made from ‘natural resource like corn and maize, the process of producing it is energy consuming and it is still a challenge to break down.
7. Polyethylene is toxic if its components leak into beverages and products that could cause health risks.
- Mild dermatitis
- Burning sensation in eyes
- Dryness and irritation in nose and throat
- Itching and irritation of the skin
- Asthma
- Hormone disruption that may cause reproductive problems
If you don’t really care about the possibility of toxicity then you may care that millions of trees are being destroyed for a wasteful product.
20 million trees are cut down for single us cup production
The plastic linings of these cups take up to 30 years to break down and only 1 in 400 are recycled in the UK
It is also estimated that 1 million cups a minute are sent to landfill.
The production of disposable cups contributes to billions of CO2 emissions per year contributing to climate change.
